Happy Holi and a Bombay Getaway

One silver lining to being in India during the scorching spring and summer months is the opportunity to celebrate Holi in the country of it’s origin. I’m pretty sure the colorful festival is on every traveler’s bucket list, and as the day approached, I was so looking forward to checking this one off mine. Leading up to March 17th, billboards sprung up around town advertising day-long concerts and big expensive parties with DJs and colorful powder-and-foam covered dance floors. Asking around, I was told that these parties cater mostly to tourists and the backpacker crowd…not exactly the kind of place one brings their toddler…

So on Monday morning, Ellie and I decided to forgo the organized events and instead headed out into our little neighborhood, not knowing what to expect. We were not disappointed. Stepping out onto the brightly dusted streets, we saw that every man, woman, child, cow, dog and motorcycle was already soaked and saturated in color. Kids chased each other down the narrow alleys with water guns and people poured buckets of water from third-floor balconies onto unsuspecting pedestrians below.

Ellie and I ducked into a shop and bought a little ducky water gun for her to use and then ran back out to join in the fun. After a while, we heard the sound of loud drums echoing down the street. Curious, we followed the sound to the gates of an apartment complex where we saw what was essentially a big block party taking place. I asked the guard if it would be alright if I took a video of the music and dancing. He nodded okay and we stepped inside. I had barely shot 20 seconds of video before a woman ran up to us and invited us in…the only catch is that we had to promise to dance! I should have expected this kindness and hospitality though. That’s India for you. It’s not always easy to love, but people here are so friendly and full of surprises. Especially during Holi!

Mumbai


The Saturday after Holi marked our 7th week in India, so to celebrate we decided to have a little getaway in Mumbai. Pune kind of lives in the shadow of India’s biggest city and all it took was an easy three-hour drive down the Pune-Mumbai expressway to find ourselves tucked into a little hotel about a block away from the Gateway of India.


This was our first trip to Mumbai but it won’t be our last. In two days, we were in no way prepared for the sheer scale of this city and were barely able to scratch the surface. We tried to make the most of our time, though, and based ourselves in the South Bombay neighborhood of Colaba. It was lovely, being so close to the water. The ocean breeze was remarkable natural air conditioning and I swear we could have spent all day riding the ferry to and from the cave temples of Elephanta Island or people watching beneath the Gateway of India. We did, however, manage to clean ourselves up and pull ourselves away from the water for high tea/early dinner at the Taj Mahal Palace. Somehow we snagged the best seat in the house at the Sea Lounge – a small booth with a big window looking out over the colorful boats bobbing up and down in the water as the golden hour descended on the harbor.


Back at the hotel, Ellie took her first real bath in weeks in our room’s deep soaking tub and man, that girl was in heaven. The whole trip was worth it particularly for the tub, but also for the lovely hotel. It was chic but deliberately rough around the edges and reminded us of our younger traveling days when we would eat breakfast shoulder-to-shoulder with backpackers and expats from around the world and chat with the staff about local secrets. It was a nice break from the sterile hotel/corporate serviced apartment world we live in most of the time.


On Sunday morning we got up early to take a long walk through South Bombay to admire the eclectic colonial architecture and watch about 20 simultaneous cricket matches playing on the Oval Maidan. We managed to squeeze in a little shopping (Oh God(s)! I could have spent all my money in Bombay! This city is full of treasures!) and lunch before packing up and getting ready to head home. We were sad to leave, but we will be back soon enough. We have so much left to see in Mumbai!

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts ɑs I find it does makе me realise whɑt’s important and ѡhat’s
not. It hellps me ѕee tһat things are а lot brighter than I thought.
Packing іn a rush for a weekend aԝay, I can’t find myy
journal ɑnd aam surprised Ƅy how bereft I feel without it.

Week fivе: I start tоo sleep well
I’m а night owl – I stay uⲣ too late watching TV ɑnd end up hitting my snoozae button ⲣast 8.30am…

ɑnd occasionally edging t᧐wards 10ɑm.

Lizz reckons ɑnyone can improve their sleep if tney follow hеr
routine, which meɑns setting an evening allarm
for 9pm – tо remind yourself to start ‘winding ɗown for bed’.

Emails, social medua ɑnd TV аre switched оff, replaced by a prdinted book оr a podcast.
Shе takeѕ 120g of magnesium glycinate іn a milky drink half аn houг befoге bbed (and stops eating tѡo hοurs befоre).

dinner.

thrilled.’

I’m delighted ѡith mу golkd star. Αnd Ι’m grateful tо
