A place to call home

Today was the first time we went to work at Kids On Campus, which looks like it’s a great situation. The school is modern, clean, and very nice looking, and the kids are beyond cute. We’ll each be getting our own class of kindergartners (and our own classroom) starting next Monday, so we’ll have this week to learn names and get up to speed on our teaching responsibilities. The kindergartners will come every day to the same class all year round, while the older students rotate between teachers each afternoon, so we’ll only see them a couple times a week. The teachers and administrators we’ve met have all been great and very willing to help, which is good because we’re going to need it.

We also moved into our apartment today, and I must say it’s a pretty nice place. We have two enclosed bedrooms, a kitchen, and a pseudo-balcony with a washing machine. It’s not huge, but it’s pretty nice and very conveniently located about 5 minutes walk from school and a quarter block away from the bright lights and hubub of a major street with lots of shops and restaurants. When we arrived at the school this afternoon, one of the administrators went with our cab driver to drop off our luggage at our apartment, which we now feel enormously guilty about given the number (6) and weight (~50 lbs each) of our bags and the fact that there is no elevator in our building and that our apartment is on the third floor. Wow.

Needless to say, we feel pretty spoiled at this point. Let’s just hope we live up to their expectations in the classroom. Jean (our supervisor) told us that some of the kindergarteners’ parents called to say good things about the new teachers, so that’s an encouraging sign. (Sidenote: It will take some getting used to for me to respond to “Gregory-teacher” and to refer to my peers as “Katelyn-teacher”, “Jeanie-teacher”, “Naomi-teacher”, etc.)

We picked up a few essentials from the Lotte Mart tonight. It’s a mega-store pretty much exactly like a full-size Tesco with the substitution of English for Korean throughout. I suspect we’ll buy some more stuff over the next couple days like plates and bowls and silverware; our school has even provided some cash up front for us to get situated.

So, yeah. Things are looking pretty good, although we know we have challenges ahead including getting adjusted to living in Korea and becoming comfortable as English teachers. We definitely feel more like foreigners now than ever, especially when we have to mime and sharade at McDonald’s. To do: learn Korean, starting with numbers.

I’m glad that you both arrived in Korea safely.  Isn’t some of modern technology great.  Last week I talked to my friend (Sun) who is from Seoul, Korea and told her about your adventure.  She said that as Americans you should get treated very well.  Katelyn, your dad had me sign up on SKYPE last night and he is trying to get Grandma to do the same.  I’ll email you my SKYPE name.  Looking foward to reading more of your adventures.  GO BLUE!!!!!

Sounds like everything is perfect!  Can’t believe you each have your own classroom, will you be able to decorate it?  (I still watch too much HGTV).
Please post pictures soon.  Love, Mom
PS- Greg- I miss your tech savvy already- I wasn’t able to send my comment on my blackberry last night.  But laptop works well.

Hi Dears,  It’s wonderful to read that things are going well-thank goodness for this sight.  Re: Cute kids-I’m going to send you one of those Postal Service boxes that you can fill to the brim-there are three sizes and yet no matter the weight- the cost is the same.  I’ll take a boy or a girl-doesn’t matter.
Mizpah-Mom
p.s Katie as soon as I have your address I will send your glasses and whatever else you need.

I’m sooo happy to hear you both made it with all your luggage – and also very proud of the fact that it didn’t cost you anything extra.  Almost brings a tear to my eye as I swell up with packing pride…hahaha.  Gameday is quickly approaching, I’ll report back with details and let you know what the Stadium is like with the renovations and if the players actually do this parade or whatever that’s rumored to go down 2 hours before kickoff.  Interesting times.  Can’t wait to hear more about your work and your home!

Hi everyone! Thanks for your well-wishes and support. It’s nice to hear from everybody, makes it seem like we’re not so far away.

We’re going to post photos of our apartment today, and then take a few shots of the area around us and such. Little by little, we’ll document everything. It’s a little bit of an overload just trying to deal with school and being utterly foreign. I think we’ll have to get some curtains at least, and definitely a table/chairs of some sort. I’m not sure if we’ve got more furniture coming or not, but we’ll see. For now, we’re pretty much living off the bed and the floor, hehe.

Oh yes! Michigan football! I can only hope our borrowed wireless connection will hold long enough for us to watch the game (it’s been a little flaky at times).
